The GENTLE WEEKLY WALKING GROUP

Regular walks as gentle as possible in Hong Kong
for those who prefer to walk with others

THE INSPIRATION

One day when walking on my own the thought occurred to me that there were people I knew who would love to hike in Hong Kong if they had knowledge of suitable routes and if they if they could walk with others.

I had been hiking all over Hong Kong for nearly 30 years, so I knew many paths and also had completed a walking group leadership training. So, why not find out if people were interested.

THE WALKING

We walk each Friday morning on Hong Kong Island for 2 - 2.5 hours hours, over a distance of 7 - 10 km.  Routes include some ascents and descents that are as gradual as is possible over the distance. Within this context the walks are gentle.

THE SOCIAL

Walking  is very conducive to communication.

The social aspect is as valued as the walking - chatting, laughs, mutual support and sharing information.

Routes often finish at a cafe and some of the group have also organised occasional social events.

SPECIAL WALKS

Occasionally, special walks are organised off Hong Kong Island and are longer than the regular trails. They have an element of discovery of new environments, of visiting places previously unknown.

The special walks have included South Lantau Country Trail, Mui Wo to Pui O Coastal Trail, Tung Chung Ancient Trail to Tai O, Wu Kau Tang circular via Lai Chi Wo, Sham Chung Wan via Hoi Ha to Tai Tan, Cheung Chau, Sok Kwu Wan circular to Yung Shue Wan.

THRIVING

The group accommodates those who walk regularly (some having joined almost every walk from inception),  those who can come occasionally and those who sometimes travel out of Hong Kong. The age range is broad and everyone is respectful of the varying abilities within the context of being suited to the length and terrain of the walks.

Being able to walk a weekly pre organised route in stunning countryside, with a most lovely group of people, who are totally welcoming and non judgemental, is wonderful.
